A Few Words on ‘The Undying Light’ by Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi

 – Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose

I was very happy to welcome Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi to Raj Bhavan during his recent visit to Kolkata. He is not only my illustrious predecessor as the Governor of West Bengal, but also a respected civil servant, thinker, and writer. I have always looked up to him as a guide and role model.

It was a special honour to receive a copy of his book The Undying Light, along with a handwritten letter from him.

The title of the book immediately caught my attention. It reminded me of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite English hymn, “Lead, Kindly Light.” The name of the book gave a sense of hope and direction. I felt drawn to it even before opening the pages.

This book tells the story of India after independence, as seen through the eyes of the discerning author.  It talks about important events in our country’s history—how democracy grew, the wars we faced, the space achievements, the effects of pandemics and natural disasters, and the current challenges.

Shri Gandhi’s writing is graceful and clear. His words create vivid images and deep thoughts. The book is easy to read, yet full of meaning.

I believe The Undying Light is an important book. It should be read by students, teachers, scholars, and anyone who wants to understand India’s journey since independence. The book gives both knowledge and inspiration. It helps us see how far we have come—and where we need to go.
